STICKS AND STONES.

Words matter. Republicans and Democrats increasingly use different words to describe the same things. The terms, used repeatedly, end up coloring the speaker’s perception. I am not suggesting an all-out war of words, but I think it is important to push back sometimes. Using humor takes some of the sting, as we are not looking for direct confrontation if we are to persuade some voters to re-consider their allegiance to the Republican Party under Trump. Here is a list of terms used by each party.

ON IMMIGRATION:

Migrant                                           Immigrant

Chain migration                            Family re-unification

Illegal alien                                     Undocumented immigrant / Asylum

                                                         Seeker / Refugee

ON EQUAL RIGHTS FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY:

Religious liberty                             Discrimination based on religion

ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS:

Murdering full-term babies            Late-term abortion

Pro-life                                           Pro-birth

ON THE SECOND AMENDMENT:

Gun confiscation                            Assault weapon buyback

The following terms were already in circulation before Trump. He further muddied the waters by twisting the original meaning:

Patriot/ America First                     Nationalist/ Isolationism

Witch hunt                                      Any investigation into his shenanigans

Deep state, elitist bureaucrats        Civil servants, federal employees

And, of course, the granddaddy of them all, FAKE NEWS, a term Trump claims to have invented. Trump also uses “collusion” for “conspiracy”. He routinely equates socialism with Venezuela and ignores the way it is practiced in Europe. He also trumpets that “The Democrats are mad because they lost” and claims a mandate from the American people. The fact is that he won the Electoral College by about 80,000 votes in three states and lost the popular vote by roughly 3 million votes.  His claim of a mandate is a huge exaggeration. This is just a partial list. You surely have your own…. and I would bet the farm I don’t have that you had no trouble guessing which column corresponded to which political party!
